Zhane

Zhane was quite a minor character compared to the others, and what he could have been. But his story is definitely unique, and the way he dealt with it was too, for sure. We first hear of him not long before he joins the series. The rangers find the room where he lays in cryogenic stasis, and Andros tells them his story, surprisingly willing to let them in on one of his many secrets.

Zhane and Andros were a team together on KO-35, best friends and closer to brothers than anything else. But when Dark Specter launched a full-scale attack on their planet, they weren’t enough to defend it, and it was clear evil was winning. Neither would give up, but towards the end Zhane saw Andros about to be killed by one of the monsters, and jumped in front of him. He shouted a warning to Andros as he grabbed the monster, taking the full impact of the blow meant for him. Zhane nearly died, but Andros brought him to the ship and placed him in stasis, hoping that with time the machine would heal him. Two years had passed.

Not long after they hear his story, the ship comes under attack and all systems shut down. Andros senses that Zhane is dead, but in his sorrow he doesn’t realize what happens next. The stasis chamber slowly begins to defrost, and the monitor begins to beep, starting a steady rhythm. White-gloved fingers curl stiffly, and the lid lifts slowly with a hiss. Zhane stands, and knowing something is wrong, he goes to find Andros.

Zhane finds himself in another battle before he knows what happened, but joins in without a question. He meets the other rangers in the ship after, and is warmly welcomed to the team. We don’t see what happens when Andros tells him of their home, but the next time we see him he’s adapted very well. Too well, one might say. His charm seems too suave, his humor and wit too ready, and nothing is ever said about the past he lived or the years he lost.

Zhane fits into the team easily, clicking most with Ashley, the most similar to him. But before he has fought for long, he discovers a problem with his powers. His powers have been draining for the two years he was in hyper sleep, and he can only stay morphed for a few minutes at a time. Each time it weakens him and threatens his life, but he fights anyway, hiding from the team what’s really going on, while leading them on to think he’s really sick. Zhane finds amusement in watching them wait on him hand and foot, but finds it’s not so fun when he has to sit out a fight. He doesn’t have time to tell them the truth before they go into battle, but he finds an electrical storm to recharge himself, a dangerous but necessary mission, and it works. He regains his powers at full strength.

Zhane was involved in one of the greatest romances in PR history . . . that of him and Astronema. From the moment he saved her life, there was something there. No one knows why he did it, whether it was attraction already, or just compassion for someone being betrayed maybe. But he takes her to safety, and cares for her like she’s a friend, genuinely concerned. Without fear he talks to her, flirts a little, and charms his way into getting a smile from the princess.

He was smitten from then on, and the feelings weren’t unreturned. She sends him a note to arrange a secret date, and he’s more than happy to accept, nervous as he prepares, and excited to get to be with her. Unfortunately a battle begins, unknown to Astronema, and Zhane must go and fight. He runs to meet her, flowers and candy in hand, but it’s too late. Astronema fires at him, soaking him in water and covering him in soot. He has no idea why, and she doesn’t believe his story, telling him she never wants to see him again. Zhane is devastated as she leaves, his heart broken like we’ve never seen. Once he returns home, the others try and talk to him about it, but he doesn’t say much, just a quiet thank you before leaving for his room.

Not long after, on a distant planet, he and Andros finally meet up with survivors of the KO-35 attacks. At first misled, they hold the other four captive, but recognize their former defenders as soon as they are revealed, and release them. After a long battle against Darkonda, Zhane makes a difficult decision. He is going to stay with his people and help them build weapons and resources against Dark Specter. It obviously pains him and Andros to part attack, but he assures them he’s always there if they need help.

Zhane isn’t gone long, but he misses a lot. He returns to help the rangers stop a dangerous asteroid, and upon completing the mission he learns that they found out Astronema is Andros’ sister, Karone. Zhane is thrilled that the good he saw in her was real, and insists on coming with Andros to the Dark Fortress to find her.

They find Astronema, no longer Karone as Andros knew her, and not even the Astronema that Zhane did. She’s been brainwashed, staring vacantly with nothing but evil in her gaze. Andros pleads with her but Zhane knows it would do no good, they have to leave without her. He explains it to the others when they return, and assures Andros, silent in his grief, that they’d find a way to bring her back somehow. She was still Karone somewhere inside.

Zhane returns again to help his friends in their battles, including the long one against the psycho rangers, their worst enemy. And that was where it began. One by one the fights got harder, the enemies stronger, and the rangers kept scraping by, barely victorious as they enter the final battle. They lose one megazord after another under Dark Specter’s full attack, and though they don’t give up, each one has doubts about their chances. When Astronema takes over after Dark Specter’s death, Andros wants to find her and talk to her, but Zhane says there’s no chance. As much as it pains him, he knows Karone is gone, and there’s no chance of her coming back.

Andros doesn’t believe him, and is angry at his lack of faith, and he leaves. Zhane is left with the others to worry about him, and all of them. They keep fighting, but he can’t help but think it’s all in vain, no doubt reliving the similar battle two years before.

However, as the battle, a shower of gold washes over them all, and they demorph as their adversaries turn to dust. Amidst all the celebrating the Dark Fortress lands, and Andros walks out. He carries Karone, lifeless in his arms, and Zhane watches in silent pain as he puts her down, crying over her body. But slowly, Astronema changes into Karone again, opening her eyes in confusion. Only then do they all rush forward in unbelievable relief.

Zhane plans to live on KO-35 with Andros and Karone, picking up the pieces of their old lives, but they each realize that it’s not possible. Their lives will never be the same, and they couldn’t try and revive what was gone. So they return to earth with the other rangers, to start new lives in a peaceful world.
